SACK FOUR OVER RACIST TEXT
Four policemen who sent each other a racist text message have been
sacked.
The officers were dismissed after an offensive joke, containing the
word ‘nigger’, was found on their private mobile phones.
A police inspector, who was shown the text by one of the men,
immediately reported it to his bosses. The officers, at least two of
whom were off-duty when the text was sent, were sacked following a
ten-month internal investigation.
They are the first serving officers to be dismissed by Greater
Manchester Police (GMP) over a racist text.
In a statement, the force said: ‘An internal disciplinary tribunal has
sacked four GMP officers after they admitted sending, receiving or
showing a racist text message to colleagues.’
The sackings come just weeks after Greater Manchester Chief Constable
Michael Todd sent a letter to all his 11,000 staff with a general
warning about racist behaviour. It read: ‘This force will not tolerate
discriminatory behaviour. Unless there are extreme extenuating
circumstances, you are likely to be sacked.’
The letter was sent after a series of stories alleging racism in the
force, including a BBC documentary, The Secret Policeman, which led to
the resignation of six officers.

may be necessary to ensure all staff are aware of what constitutes
